Shakudo nanako fuchikashira decorated with Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Musashibo Benkei at Kumagai's camp. According to the story Yoshitsune was so impressed by the beauty of a plum blossom he ordered Benkei to write on a wooden board "Anyone who cuts branch from this tree will have his finger cut off". However this note had a hidden message. It was a warning to Kumagai Jiro Naozane not to kill Atsumori, who was an illegitimate son of the Emperor. "If you kill a member of Emperor family, your own son will be killed".
This story inspired many works of art, especially woodblock prints that I find very appealing.
Made in late edo period.
